 | | | | Field trip at the National Workshop on Sediment Remobilization and Channel Morphodynamics in Active and Abandoned Reservoirs Workshop |
| | | NCED hosts or sponsors invited workshops on topics of community interest related to NCED research.
To propose a workshop, please contact Jeff Marr, NCED's Director Knowledge Transfer: marrx003@umn.edu
Past NCED-sponsored Workshops have included:
Workshop on Stream Restoration August 14-15, 2003, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota Motivation for this workshop, cosponsored by the National Research Council and NCED, was that management of water resources to sustainably provide environmental services and amenities is a national priority, particularly for streams and rivers degraded by human disturbance or modification. Both the public and private sectors consider restoring these water bodies as critical to maintain and improve water quality, sustain fish and wildlife species, protect wetlands, and reduce impacts of flood events. The goals of the workshop, were to prioritize issues, identify institutions, literature, and experts for a larger NRC study on stream restoration.
Salt Marsh Geomorphology: Physical and Ecological Effects on Landforms October, 2004, Halifax, Nova Scotia NCED cosponsored this AGU Chapman Conference convened by Raymond Torres, University of South Carolina; Danika van Proosdij, Saint Mary’s University; Sergio Fagherazzi, Florida State University; and Charles Hopkinson, Marine Biological Laboratory. The conference objective was the integration of physical and ecological sciences to enhance understanding of the interactions between salt marsh channel networks, intertidal sedimentary processes, and ecology. The conference was structured to promote exchanges between physical and biological scientists through plenary presentations, panel discussions, and small groups break out sessions, and field trips. The conference goal is publication of contributions in a special issue of JGR-Earth Surface.
National Workshop on Sediment Remobilization and Channel Morphodynamics in Active and Abandoned Reservoirs March 25-27, 2005, Torrey, Utah. The goal of this workshop, convened by NCED PI Gary Parker, was to exchange ideas and expertise, in preparation for a position paper on research needs regarding sediment remobilization and channel morphodynamics associated with dam removal to be posted on the NCED Stream Restoration Website. The workshop included overview presentations and discussion on sediment–related dam removal issues and research needs in the areas of field, experimental, and numerical modeling studies, as well as a day-long field trip to Lake Powell.
Sedimentology Stratigraphy initiative workshops The Sedimentary Geology Initiative ("ForSed") is a community-based effort, co-sponsored by NCED, SEPM (the Society for Sedimentary Geology), and NSF, to build a stronger and more cohesive sedimentary-geology community.
Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System (CSDMS) workshops NCED has an ongoing collaboration with CSDMS and has supported the CSDMS effort by hosting a workshop to create the CSDMS science plan, sharing PIs, and providing scientific support for CSDMS model construction. CSDMS will in turn provide computing infrastructure to incorporate NCED scientific findings into integrated large-scale numerical models. |
