MYRES the Results
Last month, the Meeting of Young Researchers in Earth Sciences (MYRES) conference, "Dynamic Interactions of Life and its Landscape," convened in Louisiana. Approximately 80 participants (from North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa) attended this international conference organized by a group of current and former NCED postdocs and graduate students. NCED PIs Bill Dietrich (UC Berkeley) and Robert Twilley (LSU), along with NCED partner Gordon Grant (US Forest Service), moderated session discussions. Conference outcomes include a list of critical research questions and a white paper submission to the National Research Council (NRC). The research questions, organized around the two-way interaction between landscape and ecology, provide early-career ecologists and geoscientists with an active research agenda. And, the paper to the NRC will help the NRC in defining Earth-surface research for the coming years. Additionally, conference participants spent time networking and developing professional relationships—relationships that extend across disciplines and across the globe.

University of Minnesota Colleagues and Students Win Awards
Director Named Distinguished Professor
The Institute of Technology (IT) honored NCED Director Chris Paola by naming him an IT Distinguished Professor. This award honors exceptional faculty for their efforts in and contributions to teaching and scholarly research and for their commitment to IT and its activities.

Fellowship Awarded
NCED graduate student Chandana Gangodagamage received a 2008-2009 Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. This is an all-University competition that gives outstanding final-year PhD candidates an opportunity to complete their dissertation within the upcoming academic year.

NCED Alum Receives Award
Recent NCED graduate Rob Stoll was awarded the Civil Engineering Best Dissertation Award, an internal departmental award, and was nominated for the graduate school’s Best Dissertation Award.

Louise T. Dosdall Fellowship
The recipient of this year’s Louise T. Dosdall Fellowship for the 2008-2009 school year goes to NCED graduate student Amy Hansen. This University-wide fellowship is awarded to 1-2 women per year who show exceptional promise for a successful career in science research or in engineering-related fields.

Renewable Energy Grant Awarded
NCED Principal Investigators (PIs) Fernando Porté-Agel and Fotis Sotiropoulos received a $1 million grant from the Xcel Energy Renewable Development Fund for the development of a virtual wind simulator for optimal design of wind energy projects.

REU students at SAFL
On Monday, June 2, 10 undergraduate students from institutions around the United States arrived at St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL) to participate in NCED’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) on River and Coastal Restoration. These students will work with NCED staff and PIs on two projects: the coastal restoration of the Mississippi River Delta and the ongoing efforts to document the geomorphic response of Oregon's Sandy River to the 2007 removal of the Marmot Dam. The REU program ends August 9.
