| What is the Connection between NCED and CSDMS? | | Last year NCED saw the realization of several years' worth of work (including hosting a workshop to create a science plan, sharing PIs, and providing scientific support for model construction) in the National Science Foundation's funding of the Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System (CSDMS) project. CSDMS, located at the University of Colorado, focuses on modeling, with emphasis on large-scale modular numerical modeling. CSDMS nicely complements NCED, whose focus is on process understanding and initial algorithm development. By partnering with CSDMS, NCED will gain access to the computing infrastructure needed to incorporate NCED scientific findings into integrated, large-scale, numerical models. More information to come. | | NCED Alum Tanya Warnaars at CEH | | Tanya Warnaars (UMN PhD '05) is now living and working in the United Kingdom. She is a project manager at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH). Her project: WATCH, which stands for water and global change. This project focuses on evaluating the global water cycle's response to current and future drivers of climate change. A consortium of 25 leading research centers from across Europe are involved in this project and are working to build a new, consistent modeling framework for water resources, hydrology, and climate studies. In addition, WATCH provides EU policy makers with a constant and congruent assessment of flows, floods, and droughts under present and future climate conditions. According to Warnaars, "One thing that [has] struck me about my new work place (CEH) is that the science done here is similar to NCED. Like NCED, the researchers here are investigating links between ecology, hydrology, and land-surface processes." If you are an NCED alum and would like to share your story, please contact Lanie Lord-Van Slyke. | | Tanya at work with the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.
| | | | Gary Parker Invited EGU Speaker | | NCED PI Gary Parker (UIUC) is an invited guest speaker at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2008. Parker will present on the "Effect on rivers of massive changes in hydrologic regime due to human intervention" at the EGU special session. | | Announcing PRRSUM | | The first meeting of Partnership for River Restoration and Science in the Upper Midwest (PRRSUM—pronounced "prism") took place at the SAFL Auditorium Tuesday, February 12. This new group, involving federal and local agencies, watershed managers, consultants, researchers, and educators, will meet monthly at SAFL to hear presentations and participate in discussions on important topics in river restoration and river research.
