| NCED and SMM Youth Working on Museum Water Exhibition | | Youths from the Fond du Lac Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa, who are participants in NCED's gidakiimanaaniwigamig (Our Earth Lodge) environmental camps and after-school programs, are collaborating with the Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM) Youth Science Center Water Crew on the upcoming 2009 SMM Water Exhibition. These youth are charged with creating a section of the exhibition that shows how water in their community ties in with Earth's water story, as will be described by the SMM Water Exhibition. The SMM Water Crew and gidakiimanaaniwigamig (gida) youths met for the first time in October and then again at the fall gida science camp. During this second meeting, the gida youth shared with the Water Crew what they learned from their visit (read a summary of their experience) to the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) water exhibition, Water: H2O = Life. Later this month, these two groups of youth met with SMM exhibit staff to share ideas and receive feedback on how best to move forward with this collaborative project. | | Awards, Awards, Awards | Hydrologic Sciences Award NCED Co-Director Efi Foufoula-Georgiou (UMN) received the 2007 Hydrologic Sciences Award at the Fall 2007 American Geophysical Union Meeting. This award recognizes Foufoula-Georgiou for her important and far-reaching contributions to space-time rainfall modeling and scaling analysis in hydrology. | 2007 IAHR M. Yalin Award Winner Gary Parker, NCED PI (UIUC), received the 2007 International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research (IAHR) M. Selim Yalin Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his work in sediment transport, river engineering, river morphodynamics, and submarine sedimentation processes. | Ecological Society of America President-Elect Beginning August 2008, NCED PI Mary Power (UCB) will be president-elect of the Ecological Society of America. Her tenure as president will begin August 2009 and will last one year. | 2007 Horton Research Grant Winner Christian Braudrick, NCED graduate student (advisor: Dietrich) at the University of California, Berkeley, was one of three students who received the 2007 Horton Research Grant. This grant will support Braudrick's research on linkages between sediment supply and channel morphology using flume experiments and numerical models. | CUAHSI 2007 Early Career Fellowship Award Anne Lightbody, NCED Research Associate (UMN), received one of six Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science (CUAHSI) Early Career Fellowships. | | |
