There are many benefits and consequences associated with any dam project. This activity is designed to have students debate the different perspectives associated with the issue of dam removal. It is intended to be used in conjunction with a unit on rivers and give further insight into river science and some perspective on relevant issues. The activity is designed around a real dam removal issue on the Elwha River in Washington. It shows the somewhat complex nature of the debate and the connection between humans their environment.
This activity focuses on the dam removal debate from six different positions. The perspectives included in this activity are: Native American, local resident, commercial fisherperson, industry, researcher and a governmental representative. Each position will have a short biography of the person the student is representing and insight into the issues from each respected position. The students will be given the resources they need to work cooperatively and successfully debate their position while teaching other students about the issue.
